We read *more* on the web
The most surprising finding of upcoming Eyetrack 2007 is this, according to the researchers: A much larger percentage of story text was read, on average, online than in print.
- 77 % online
- 62 % in broadsheet
- 57 % in tabloid
These findings could of course be used as an excuse by lazy editors (or their managers) for not writing good web content. Well, think again. The second finding is that while 75 % of print readers are methodical online readers are different. Only half are methodical and the other half are scanners. We still need to catch they eye of people quickly looking for overview.
In about a week all of the findings will be presented and in-depth conclusions should probably wait for that. But basically the message seems to be optimistic. Do it well and you will be read. More than in print. Talk about good news.
